World's best spas named
20 September 2006
The world's best spas have been named at an awards ceremony in New York.
A vote by readers of Luxury Spa Finder magazine choose their best spas across the world.
In Europe the best spa was named as the Brenner's Park Hotel & Spa in Baden-Baden, Germany, while the best UK spa was the London's Mandarin Oriental.
In Asia the honours went to Thailand's Chiva-Som in Hua Hin and the awards for best spa in North and South America went to the Miraval Life in Balance in Arizona and the Kurotel Longevity Center and Spa in Brazil respectively.
South Africa's Santé Winelands Hotel and Wellness Centre took the gong for Africa and Australia's Spa Chakra Hayman on Great Barrier Reef took the final honours.
Spa Finder president Susie Ellis highlighted the fact travellers are now increasingly opting for destination spas that offer a wide range of activities and treatments.
She said: 'If there's a trend to be gleaned from this year's awards, it's that spa-goers want the broad spectrum that spas have to offer: fitness, spa cuisine, therapies as well as magical settings and technical expertise.
'Today, "spa" has become a broad umbrella term encompassing a world of different experiences - from medical programmes, to fitness retreats, to traditional pampering.'
