Hand luggage rules relaxed on UK flights
21 September 2006
The government has announced that it is relaxing restrictions placed on hand baggage for passengers on international flights departing from UK airports.
Passengers are still limited to one item of hand luggage, but it can now be around the size of a small, weekend suitcase. The size of bags that can be carried onto flights boarded in UK airports has been increased to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 17.75in x 9.85in).
Most liquids, except for essential medicines, milk and baby food, will still be banned on international flights, but valuable musical instruments can now be carried onboard in a separate case after screening.
Tighter restrictions on hand luggage were imposed across Britain after UK police foiled a terrorist attempt to blow up transatlantic flights from Heathrow using liquid explosives last month. Severe delays were witnessed following a series of raids in Britain on August 14 and it has cost airlines large sums to impose the new rules.
The Department for Transport security division has been discussing the hand luggage restrictions with representatives from the aviation industry. The move to relax the rules has been welcomed by airlines.
