Thailand's new Suvarnabhumi Airport is to open to international and domestic flights, despite the political upheaval in the country.

The £2 billion airport, designed to replace Bangkok International, will open as planned on 28 September.

Transport permanent secretary Wanchai Sarathulthat made it clear that the airport would open on schedule and dismissed any reports of power failures.

He said: 'A large amount of equipment has been moved to the new airport and the world has already been informed of its opening. All systems - including passenger check-in, air traffic control and transportation - have been prepared for full commercial operation.'

On 19 September, the Thai military took power while the prime minister was out of the country. However, foreign visitors outside the capital have been largely unaffected by the coup.

The UK Foreign Office advises Britons in Bangkok to use their discretion and avoid approaching military vehicles. It describes the situation in the country as a whole as currently being 'calm'.
