Rwanda to import rhinos
26 September 2006
Rwanda is to import as many as 20 rhinos in the next 15 years in a bid to boost tourism.
Around £300,000 has been earmarked for the project with Rhinos possibly coming from Kenya or South Africa.
The rhinos will be heading to the Akagera National Park is the east of the country, which covers 2,500 sq km and boasts more than 500 species of birds, elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus, lion and antelope.
The announcement of the plan came after the last surviving black rhino in the park died.
However, last week Fidel Ruzigandekwe, the national tourism office director of wildlife, announced that one further rhino has been spotted.
He told the Sunday Times: 'The rhino was successfully traced and found by our field staff and the park security.
'There is nothing to worry about regarding the safety of this animal because we have a team monitoring its safety and movements on the ground.'
The authorities eventually plan to tag the rhino to keep a close eye on its whereabouts.
Last year around 45,000 tourists headed to Rwanda, providing the country with its third largest source of foreign income.
Many visitors head to Rwanda's rain forests and the mountain gorillas there, made famous by the work of Dian Fossey and the film Gorillas in the Mist.
