Mother gives birth at 30,000ft
27 September 2006
A women flying from London to Boston with British Airways gave birth this weekend.
The mother, believed to be Egyptian, went into labour five hours into the flight and the plane was diverted to Halifax in Nova Scotia.
However, with the help of a retired midwife and two medical students on board, baby Nadine was born, six weeks premature.
Crew member Kam Dobe said: 'The mother was fine but baby was very small, so it was touch and go."
He added: 'I've been at the birth of all my three children so I knew what was going on. We told her to push when she had contractions and to rest in between to conserve her energy.
'It was really touching. The whole crew was involved, everyone mucked in. Teamwork prevailed.'
Mr Dobe went on to explain that the airline has an action plan for such emergencies and passengers were not told that a women was giving birth, only that a medical emergency was happening.
Mother and child are believed to doing well and recovering in a Canadian hospital.
