Danes get electronic passports
02 October 2006
The Danish National Police has announced that it will be issuing electronic passports to citizens.
All new passports issued will incorporate the electronic capabilities and Danish authorities hope to have handed out 250,000 by the end of this year.
The new passports contain a computer chip which stores all of the identity information currently printed on traditional passports and will also hold a digitised photograph.
'As we have been producing and personalising the traditional Danish passports for the past two years, we have gained an in-depth understanding of the Danish authorities' requirements,' said Jacques Seneca, president Europe at Gemalto, the company making the passports.
'We are proud to further develop our relationship with the Danish authorities through latest generation smart and secure travel documents which will benefit both administrations and citizens.'
Gemalto has provided passports for the Czech Republic, France, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, Sweden and the United States of America.
