EU, US trying for data agreement
03 October 2006

The European Union (EU) has said that it hopes to reach an agreement with the US over sharing passenger data.

It comes after the previous agreement, which was installed after 11 September, expired recently, reports Reuters.

Under the previous agreement, European airlines provided US authorities with information such as the name, address and telephone numbers of people entering the country.

An EU court decided the agreement should be ended on a legal technicality and gave both the US and Europe until 30 September to replace it.

However, talks between the two broke down and now both sides are trying desperately to reach an agreement.

'Much progress has already been made,' said an EU statement. 'It is in the interests of all concerned, travellers, airlines, law enforcement agencies and data protection authorities, that a new agreement is concluded as soon possible.'

Concerns have been raised by a number of airlines that unless a new agreement is reached there could soon be severe disruption to services.
