Iran invites nuclear tourists
05 October 2006

The president of Iran has allowed his country's nuclear sites to be opened as tourist attractions.

Irna news agency reports that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave the go-ahead for foreign visitors to be granted access in a bid to prove that its nuclear programme is a peaceful one.

Tourists are likely to be given tours of sites in Isfahan and Natanz, with a new site in Bushehr also a possible tourist attraction.

The news comes as the United Nations Security Council has told the country to stop uranium enrichment, as there are fears that it may be attempting to build a nuclear weapon.

This has been vehemently denied by Iran's president, who claims the nuclear programme is purely for civilian purposes.

Iran's head of tourism has revealed that Ahmadinejad asked him to look into ways of allowing tourists to see the sites.

'This authorisation has been issued since the Iranian nuclear activities are peaceful,' said Esfandyar Rahim Mashaii.
