Glasgow Airport rail link
05 October 2006

Glasgow has received a boost with the news that BAA Scotland has withdrawn its objections to the building of a rail link to the airport.

The airport operator had been the last major objector to the £210m scheme but now the company has backed down and will help to fund the project.

An agreement, which remains undisclosed, has been reached between BAA and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport the firm behind the rail link.

'The agreement that has now been reached moves the project forward and I am pleased that BAA is onside,' said transport minister Tavish Scott.

The project involves the building of a train line between Glasgow Central train station and the airport, with four trains running every hour.

By 2010, it is hoped that the rail link will be in full service, with a journey time of around 16 minutes.

At present the airport is served by an express bus link from central Glasgow but the service is often hampered by traffic.

BAA had previously objected to the scheme on the basis that it could affect airport operations.
