EU, US reach data deal
06 October 2006

The European Union (EU) and the US have finally reached an agreement over the sharing of airline passenger data.

After a series of negotiations a deal has been found which suits the needs and concerns of both parties.

It comes after an original agreement, which was put in place following the attacks on the World Trade Centre on 11 September, was quashed by the European Court of Justice in May this year.

The previous treaty meant US authorities were given access to 34 pieces of information concerning EU passengers entering the country.

There was a period of limbo when the deal expired in October and negotiations concerning a new agreement broke down.

However, the issue has been resolved after nine hours of talks, with the EU said to be pleased with the result.

It centres on how information is obtained by the US, with the new agreement meaning data will be sent to authorities in the country rather than allowing American officials to access information unconditionally.

The latest settlement is due to expire in July 2007.
