EC liquid restrictions on flights
06 October 2006
The European Commission (EC) has backed new rules concerning the amount of liquids passengers can take on flights.
It is expected that restrictions will be introduced in November after the rules were given their support on 5 October.
Under the new laws, passengers will only be allowed to carry toiletries, such as toothpaste and contact lens solution, in their hand luggage.
Drinks and large containers of liquid will not be permitted on flights unless they are bought after security checks have been carried out.
Rules will also be put in place governing the size of all hand luggage as European Union (EU) member states seek to unify security measures.
'The new regulation will plug a gap in our defences by restricting the liquids that passengers can carry past screening points and on board aircraft,' said EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot.
'It will apply to all departing flights in order to protect people everywhere in the [EU].'
There will be exemptions to the rules, with medicines and baby food allowed, while bags may exceed the size limits for musical instruments and cameras.
