Passengers' weight leads to delays
09 October 2006

A group of holidaymakers had to endure a longer flight than expected when they were forced to refuel.

Over 100 passengers had their journey interrupted when their flight from Bristol to Tenerife made an unscheduled stop-off in Portugal.

Travellers were told that they were too heavy and the plane was unable to make the relatively short journey in one go, reports the Sun.

The flight's captain is reported to have spoken to the passengers, outlining why they needed to land at Faro airport.

'Now the children have gone back to school, we're carrying a heavier load and need more fuel,' he told them.

The unscheduled stop was put down to a mixture of factors, including a short runway at Bristol airport and the fact that the plane was full of adults who tend to weigh more then children.

'The captain came on the tannoy and apologised for the late departure, saying they'd had to stop on the way for more fuel,' said a female passenger.

'It seemed a bit odd - after all, Tenerife's hardly a long-haul flight.'
