US goes electronic
11 October 2006

The US has continued to install e-passport readers at a number of its busiest hubs.

New York JFK International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, join San Francisco in having the readers put in place.

It is part of the US Department of Homeland Security's (DHS's) plan for all airports in the country to have the capability to process e-passports by 26 October 2006.

The DHS says that the installation of e-passport readers is another step in the process of increasing security in the country and ensuring duplicate travel documents are prevented from being used.

E-passports are being used as a tool in the fight against the use of fraudulent passports and the battle to prevent identity theft.

People planning on visiting the US after the stated deadline that do not have an e-passport are being reassured that they should have no trouble entering the country as long as their passport was issued before that date and is valid.

However, those who may have doubts about the validity of their documents should contact a US consular office in their home country.
