Scotland's airport boom
11 October 2006
Scotland's airports have seen a large increase in the number of passengers passing through them as a result of improved international links.
BAA Scotland, the company which runs the country's three biggest hubs, has reported an overall increase in passenger numbers of 2.4% in the last year, reports the Scotsman.
Aberdeen Airport saw the largest increases, with 9.7 per cent more travellers passing through in the first nine months of 2006 compared to the same period in 2005.
Edinburgh saw an increase of 2.3%, while Glasgow, which yesterday unveiled plans to expand its passenger capacity, saw an increase of 0.2%.
The figures show that Glasgow is still the country's busiest airport with 8.77m passengers passing through it, while Edinburgh follows closely behind with 8.56m and Aberdeen handled 3.1m.
Scotland's improved links with other international destinations is being touted as one reason behind the growth in passenger numbers.
This is also being labelled as a factor in the UK's overall figures which dipped as a result of fewer people taking connecting flights.
