UK tourism boost
12 October 2006

The UK has seen an increase in foreign visitors between the months of June and August.

There was a 5% rise in tourist numbers for the period in 2006 compared to the same time in 2005.

Despite the positive year-on-year figures, the UK saw 4% fewer visitors compared to the three months leading up to June.

Visitors spent 8% more money during the period in 2006 than they did in 2005, although once again this was 2% less than the previous three months.

The number of North American tourists increased to 4.4m during the 12 months leading up to August 2006.

European visitor numbers also rose, with 5% more people taking a holiday in the UK, meaning 20m passed through the country.

UK residents also made more trips abroad, with 67.7m journeys made. Western Europe was the most popular destination as 50.7m visited the region.
