Terminal 5's driverless trains
12 October 2006
The opening of Heathrow's Terminal Five in spring 2008 will see the introduction of driverless trains.
Around 6,500 passengers will be transported on the trains every hour which will initially carry people from Terminal Five building A to building B.
The project is a joint venture between airport operator BAA and construction firm Balfour Beatty.
The tracked transit unit will be capable of reaching speeds of 31mph and six carriages will be put in place in the tunnel which has been built beneath the terminal buildings.
Eventually it is planned that the service will also extend to Terminal Five building C, with operators expecting this to become a reality in 2011.
Heathrow's Terminal Five is the biggest aviation project in Europe and is set to massively increase the number of passengers passing through the hub.
It will be able to cater for 30m passengers and will boast a hotel and around 60 new aircraft stands.
