Thai floods affect tourism
13 October 2006

Floods which are affecting parts of Thailand are having an adverse effect on tourism in the country.

Although many businesses have managed to avoid the worst, some in Ayutthaya are struggling, reports the Bangkok Post.

Staff at the Ayutthaya Elephant Park have been forced to remove a number of their elephants after flood waters submerged their usual home.

The elephants play a large role in tourism in the area and the floods are costing the locals much needed money.

'We have never faced such a crisis before. Water came very fast and the current was so strong that we had to move the jumbos from the park,' said park manager, Kannapoj Tipwong.

Workers at the park have described the difficulties they have been having caring for the animals as food is becoming scarce.

Visitor number have plummeted to almost zero since the floods began, with the park usually welcoming 50 visitors per day.
