Indian visas row
13 October 2006
Tourism officials in the Indian city of Chennai have expressed their concern over the difficulties some tourists face when visiting.
Although visitor numbers are up, it is not uncommon for foreign tourists to experience problems when trying to gain a visa to enter the country.
Officials say this is causing many people to postpone or even cancel their trip and the problem is affecting business throughout the nation, reports the Newindpress.
'The issue has been there for a long time because Indian embassies in Europe, USA and UK put a lot of hurdles for applicants to cross before issuing visas to India,' said a former Travel Agents Association of India worker.
'Hence many travellers, who are our clients, change their plans. This has an adverse impact for us.'
Frustration is growing within the Indian tourism industry as people see the good work of India Tourism being undone by the slow process of issuing visas.
One idea which has been put forward is to introduce a system which allows tourists to receive their visas once they have arrived in the country.
