UAE's cultural move
16 October 2006
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is planning to open its doors to a new kind of tourist by opening a series of cultural hubs.
The region is currently popular among travellers for its shopping malls, skyscrapers and luxurious hotels, reports website Calendarlive.com.
However, the governments want to attract a different type of tourist as well and plan to do this by establishing a number of cultural attractions.
Qatar will soon be home to an Islamic art museum which is expected to open its doors next year.
Abu Dhabi has plans for a Guggenheim museum which will display modern art, while Dubai is also making moves to incorporate more art into the state.
It is hoped that the change of tact will make the region more appealing to high-end tourists who are interested in gaining an education as well as a tan while on holiday.
