Hawaii earthquake
16 October 2006

Hawaii's Big Island has been rocked by a large earthquake, leading to landslides and blocked roads.

Tourists on the island had to be evacuated from hotels and other buildings as the quake, which was measured at 6.6 on the Richter scale, shook the region on 15 October.

A number of hotels have reported injuries and large-scale disruption, although fortunately there were no reported deaths.

Hotel guests were ordered via public address systems to leave the buildings they were staying in.

The earthquake struck when the number of tourists in the American state is low, however the disruption caused to travel arrangements is vast.

Residents and tourists are enduring a blackout at the moment as electricity cables have been felled.

Despite this, the airport remains fully operational although many flights have been cancelled and travel around the island is proving difficult.

The earthquake struck in the early hours of the morning out at sea but officials have moved to assure people that there is no danger of a tsunami striking.
