New world wonders
17 October 2006

The competition to become one of the New Seven Wonders of the World is nearing its conclusion with a shortlist of 21 sites having been drawn up.

Since it was first decided in 2000 that a new set of wonders would be given the status, members of the public have been nominating and voting for hundreds of locations around the world.

Now, the chair of a group of distinguished architects has narrowed the list down to just 21 for what is the final stage of the competition.

The race has already attracted global interest with 19m people having voted to get specific places to this stage.

Among the 21 finalists are the Colosseum in Italy, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, Stonehenge in the UK, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

The winners of the competition to become one of the New Seven Wonders of the World will be voted for by a global public and the results will be announced on 7 July 2007.
