Heathrow's newest terminal
17 October 2006
Heathrow could soon have a new terminal, named Heathrow East.
Airport operator BAA has put forward proposals and submitted a planning application following a public consultation.
The new terminal would replace the existing Terminal Two and the Queen's Building which are located at the centre of the hub.
The aim is to improve the level of service offered at the terminal and plans include a state of the art building that will also be more environmentally friendly than the current one.
BAA would like to see Heathrow East match the standards that will soon be displayed at Terminal Five and has been speaking with the public to ensure the building suits their needs.
'It was vital we sought the views and suggestions of those with an interest in the future of the airport,' said BAA Heathrow chief executive Tony Douglas.
'Through this consultation we have received constructive feedback which we have incorporated into the planning application for Heathrow East.
'The opening of Terminal Five in 2008 presents us with a crucial window of opportunity to redevelop our ageing buildings, enabling us to continue to transform Heathrow and to provide a service worthy of the UK's premiere gateway,' he added.
Heathrow East will not increase the capacity of Heathrow Airport and is planned simply to replace dated buildings.
