Kent's US link
18 October 2006
Kent is looking forward to an influx of people from Virginia in the USA after it was announced that a direct route is to be established between the state and Kent International Airport.
The flights are due to begin next year and a special event has been held in Virginia to promote the link, reports website Kent Online.
Around 200 people attended at a hotel near to Norfolk International Airport in the US.
The flights between Kent and Virginia will be beneficial to both as, despite its name, Norfolk's airport does not host international flights.
'This is probably the biggest gamble we have ever taken, but I'm very optimistic and excited about it,' said chief executive of the airport Ken Scott.
'I think our community is ready to support this type of service.'
Councillor Alex King from Kent County Council told those at the event that he is looking forward to seeing more Virginians in the UK.
'We welcome you all to Kent,' he said. 'We shall be delighted to share with you a very special place. At every level this is a great adventure.'
