Hawaii's advertising campaign
18 October 2006

Hawaii is launching a new advertising campaign aimed at ensuring tourists around the world are aware that the state is open for business.

Following a large earthquake which struck the region on 15 October, tourism officials have been concerned that visitor numbers will fall.

Despite the quake causing power outages across most of the state, there were no deaths and major damage was avoided.

The airport suffered slight delays but recovered within a couple of days and none of the major roads were affected.

However, there are concerns that pictures broadcast on news channels across the world, showing damaged buildings and people sleeping on the airport floor, will have done some damage.

'I'm certain there are cancellations that will occur because of this,' governor Linda Lingle told the Honolulu Advertiser. But she went on to say that experts 'don't expect a long-term impact, and I don't either'.

The state plans to launch a large-scale television advertising campaign which will depict Hawaii's idyllic surroundings.
