New train operator heads out of Manchester International
29 March 2006
The rush for Blackpool's possible new super casino could be boosted by a new train franchise heading into the city from Manchester Airport.
The government announced that the contract to run services out of the airport's train station to Blackpool has been awarded to Trans Pennine Express from Northern Rail.
The company had already been operating the service since 2004 under contract to Northern Rail.
Changes, to be completed by June 2006, will mean that passengers can expect newer rolling stock to carry them from the airport to the north-west's biggest attractions from the end of the year, taking visitors from Europe to a new super-casino, if the government allows it to be built there.
'The transfer will serve to improve the robustness of rail operations in the north-west and facilitate the introduction of new rolling stock,' said Derek Twigg, rail minister.
"Passengers using the line will not see a reduction in services or changes to the timetable because of this transfer and will benefit from the introduction of new trains."
