India's farmers turn to tourism
23 October 2006

A number of farmers in India are turning to tourism as a way of making money.

After a particularly bad harvest and increasing debts, many farmers are choosing to open up their homes and let tourists rent their rooms, reports the Times of India.

Farmers of cardamom, coffee, tea and vanilla in the district of Waynad are allowing visitors to stay and therefore solving their financial problems.

It is also offering many tourists a slightly different experience when it comes to visiting the region as they get to live in a fully operational farmhouse.

The Kerala Wynad Tourism organisation is supporting the farmers that choose to take this route and training has been given.

Around 30 farmers in the region are taking part in the scheme and each one has been given training in communication and hospitality.

Wynad is already beginning to see the benefits of the farmers' actions, with the number of visitors increasing by up to 20% since the scheme began.
