Hong Kong wins award
23 October 2006
Hong Kong has received the honour of being voted Best Overseas City at the UK's 2006 Guardian, Observer and Guardian Unlimited Travel Awards.
The opinions of over 15,000 people were taken into account, with submissions made by readers of the newspapers and their corresponding website.
In 2005, Hong Kong was voted as the third best overseas city so this year's results display a big jump in the city's popularity among British tourists.
It is the only Asian city to make it into the top ten of the poll which has a readership which is largely dominated by affluent young professionals.
Hong Kong benefits from a large number of UK visitors every year who make up the majority of tourists from Europe.
In 2005, Hong Kong saw a record-breaking 465,000 British tourists make the trip to the city, while figures for the first eight months of 2006 have shown a further 8% increase.
