Mumbai's waxworks
24 October 2006
Tourists visiting Mumbai will soon be able to see waxwork models of Bollywood actors and other Indian stars when a Madame Tussauds opens in the city.
The famous London attraction is set to branch out into the Indian market as part of owners Dubai International Capital's plans to expand.
Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar, two of the country's biggest cricketing stars, are set to appear at the site, while other celebrities will also follow.
Madame Tussauds has attractions in Shanghai and Hong Kong, with both doing well, and it is as a result of these success stories that Mumbai will now get its own waxwork wonderland.
'These overseas sites are thriving thanks to research into the quirks of local celebrity culture,' said Robert Roger, Madame Tussauds' finance director.
'In Shanghai, for instance, the most popular female waxwork is not Kylie Minogue nor a Chinese pop star but Audrey Hepburn.'
Mumbai has been pinpointed as an attractive market due to the size of its population and India's fascination with celebrity.
