Macao's visitor numbers grow

The Chinese island of Macao has benefited from a large increase in the number of tourists it has received so far this year.

For the first nine months of 2006 Macao saw 15.89m tourists visit the country, signalling an increase of 15.4% compared to the same period last year.

Figures released by the government-run Statistics and Census Service show that in 2005 the island hosted 18.71m visitors and forecasts for 2006 show that number could top 21m.

The majority of tourists came from the Chinese mainland, making up over half of all visitors.

People from Hong Kong accounted for 31.4% of all tourists and those from Taiwan made up 6.8%.

Macao is famous for its casino industry and has been held in high regard as a popular Asian tourist destination for many years.
