Luke warm reaction to Queen's lights
25 October 2006

Buckingham Palace is to be lit from dusk until 23:00 every night until the end of Queen Elizabeth II's reign as monarch of the UK.

The palace is said to have taken the decision, which has angered some people, after a period of pressure from tourism officials.

It was hoped that by lighting the palace at night it would become an even greater attraction for visitors to London.

However, after the first night of having an illuminated Buckingham Palace many tourists who turned up to see it were left dissatisfied.

'That's disappointing. We were waiting for something spectacular,' said Clive Spingett who was visiting the capital city from Suffolk.

'I've got better lights on my house,' added his wife.

Some travellers were slightly more impressed with how the palace looked, but were unhappy because of the environmental impact.

'I suppose it's OK, but in a society that's supposed to be saving energy it's kind of wasteful,' said Steve Wadland from Devon.

The palace has revealed that the lights used are energy-efficient in response to an angry reaction by environmental activists.
