Foreign spending up in Brazil
25 October 2006

Tourism officials in Brazil are expecting to see a large increase in the amount of money spent by foreign visitors during 2006.

The Brazilian Tourism Institute (BTI) is confident that the year will prove to be a fruitful one compared to 2005 despite having seen a slight drop in spending during September, reports Brazzil Mag.

The Central Bank of Brazil has released figures for September which show spending was down by 1.6% compared to the same period last year, but figures for the first nine months of 2006 are much more positive.

'The launch of new international flight routes, scheduled for the last quarter of this year, may contribute to further increase the revenues,' said director of surveys and research at BTI, Jose Francisco de Salles Lopes.

According to the Central Bank of Brazil, during the first nine months of the year income generated by foreign spending increased by 12.7% compared to the same period in 2005.
