A fishy problem for SA tourism
26 October 2006
Tourism officials in South Africa are concerned about the impact a new fish cannery is likely to have on one of the country's most popular destinations.
Mossel Bay harbour, which is famous for its beaches, hotels, guests houses and restaurants, is set to be adorned with the factory which will be capable of processing 10,00 tonnes of pilchards every year.
Concerns have been raised by Mossel Bay Tourism (MBT) which says the project must be stopped.
'As far as the beaches are concerned, we're worried that the presence of blood-water will attract sharks to the bay, and this would increase the chance of attacks on bathers,' MBT chairman Louis Harris told news agency Sapa.
Work has already begun on the site, which sits just a few hundred metres from the region's beaches, but Mr Harris says a proper public consultation was not carried out.
'Now that the factory is becoming a reality, many, many people are objecting because they believe that it would damage our largest industry, which is tourism,' he said.
MBT says it is not against the building of the cannery, but wants it to be moved to a more suitable location.
