Israel's gay tourism drive
27 October 2006
Israel's foreign ministry is working to promote the country's gay community in an attempt to breakdown stereotypes and penetrate a valuable tourism market.
Officials in Israel are concerned that many liberal Americans and Europeans have a negative image of the country when it comes to gay rights and they want to set the record straight.
Gay activist Michael Hamel is currently travelling around Europe and North America trying to promote gay Israel.
Mr Hamel told the Jerusalem Post that Israel's foreign ministry is firmly behind the Association of Gay Men, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders (Agudah) and the pair are "working very closely" together.
It comes despite rising protests in the country over Jerusalem's Gay Pride parade which is due to take place on 10 November.
Agudah is said to be working on developing a gay map of Tel Aviv, giving homosexual tourists a guide to some of the best places to visit.
