Typhoon batters Philippines
30 October 2006
A powerful typhoon has struck the northern Philippines, killing at least ten people in just 24 hours.
Typhoon Cimaron battered the region on 30 October with government officials warning residents and tourists to take shelter, reports the Sun Star Network.
Winds were recorded hitting speeds of up to 130mph, leaving a trail of devastation across many parts of the Philippines.
Cimaron has already claimed many lives, with five people having drowned or been killed by falling trees in Isabela province.
The mayor in the region, Renato Candido, has revealed that 90% of the housing in the town has been damaged during the storm.
Elsewhere, landslides have claimed a number of lives and many people have been left homeless.
It is the second time in as many months that the Philippines have been struck by a devastating storm after Typhoon Milenyo left 230 dead in September.
