Picton is Australia's most haunted
30 October 2006
The town of Picton in southern New South Wales has been named Australia's most haunted town.
A new book which outlines the spookiest places for tourists to visit in Australia puts Picton at the top of the list, but the mayor disagrees, reports ABC News.
Philip Costa, mayor of Wollondilly, has vowed that the council will not promote Picton as a haunted town, but he is hopeful that the extra attention will attract more tourists.
'It may attract people who are interested in the ghost tour that is run, but that's an evening function and Picton is... [a] metropolis where we have a lot of people around the town after hours, in fact you'd be lucky to get a car in the main street at 21:00,' he said.
The book, entitled Haunted and Mysterious Australia, cited Picton's former railway station which is now a mushroom farm and hosts ghost tours as one of the reasons for being given the title.
As well as Picton, the Burrawang Swamp in the New South Wales southern highlands was also named as a haunted area.
