Mount Warning can be climbed
30 October 2006

A tourism official in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has moved to assure tourists that there is no ban on climbing one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

Mount Warning in the Tweed, in northern NSW, has long been a great attraction for both foreign and domestic visitors.

However, a sign has recently been erected at the foot of the mountain, asking people not to climb it out of respect for the traditional customs of the Aboriginal people.

Garry Matthews, general manager at Tweed and Coolangatta Tourism Incorporated, has made it clear to anyone visiting the mountain that the sign is a request and is not the law.

'What it does do is actually highlight the fact that Mt Warning is of very, very significant cultural importance to the Bundjalung people,' he told ABC News.

'In a lot of ways that actually adds to the whole tourism experience, because there's a kind of layer there, if you like, cultural significance which is highlighted by the fact that the Bundjalung people have made their views known,' he added.

Mount Warning is on the World Heritage list and is the remains of an ancient volcano.
