Visit Bin Laden's cave
31 October 2006
The caves in Afghanistan where Osama Bin Laden is believed to have been hiding following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre are to be turned into a tourist resort.
Tora Bora is to be converted with a number of hotels and restaurants set to be built in the mountains which overlook the al-Qaida leader's former hideout, reports the Sun.
It is believed that around £5.3m will be spent on creating a holiday resort which tourism officials hope will be popular among foreign visitors.
'Tora Bora is world famous - but we want it to be known for tourism, not terrorism,' said Gul Agha Sherazi, a former warlord who is now a local governor.
'It was known as a picnic spot long before anyone had heard of Osama Bin Laden.'
The mastermind behind the atrocities of 11 September 2001 is believed to have fled Tora Bora following a sustained bombing blitz from the US.
Despite two journalists having been killed in the region in October, Mr Sherazi insists 'Tora Bora is 100 per cent safe'.
