Lebanon seeks tourists
31 October 2006

Lebanon's minister of tourism has moved to encourage foreign visitors to travel to the country.

Joseph Sarkis is working to promote the country and its capital Beirut in the wake of the recent conflict with Israel.

Lebanon was fast becoming a popular tourist destination before Israel's bombing campaign which officially came to an end on 1 October 2006.

Now the country wants to rebuild its reputation as a holiday haven and Mr Sarkis says visitors are welcome.

'Lebanon has been and still is the meeting of great civilizations and culture,' said Mr Sarkis on Lebanon's official tourism website.

'Beirut and all of Lebanon welcome the world with heartfelt smiles and opened arms to come visit its sunny shores, beautiful mountains, and lush green valleys.

'The policy of the new government is to enhance the promotion of tourism in different sectors and to encourage investments in the country in order to make Lebanon a first class tourism destination in the Middle East,' he added.
