Bulgaria sees visitor numbers grow
01 November 2006
The number of foreign tourists visiting Bulgaria has increased considerably between 2005 and 2006.
Figures from the State Tourism Agency (STA) show that there was a 5.39% increase in visitor numbers during the first nine months of 2006 compared to the same period last year, reports Novinite, a news agency based in Sofia.
In addition to the positive visitor numbers, Bulgarian tourism officials also saw revenue generated by tourists increase.
In total, foreign tourists spent 5.45% more while visiting the country up until September in 2006 compared to the same period in 2005.
Stanislav Novakov, the deputy head of the Bulgarian STA, told website investor.bg that although the figures are encouraging, the country is still lagging behind the likes of Ireland, Norway and the UK which have more dynamic markets.
In addition, the STA has pointed out that Bulgaria's tourism sector needs to focus on improving the quality of tourist services, staff qualification and infrastructure.
