Hong Kong's tourist numbers grow

Hong Kong has seen visitor numbers in the city grow by 2.4% in October 2006, compared to the same period last year.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced that the city saw 1.83m visitors, with figures for the first nine months of 2006 even more impressive.

In total, 18.57m tourists made the trip to Hong Kong up to September, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2005.

The majority of visitors came from mainland China (50.8%), while the destination also proved popular with people from south Asia, north Asia and the Americas.

Visitor numbers from these regions all displayed impressive growth, however the biggest increases were seen from countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Hong Kong's hotels benefited greatly from the influx of tourists, with over 60% of visitors staying in the city for at least one night.
