Fiji's eco-tourism drive
03 November 2006

The Macuata Provincial Council in Fiji has announced plans to develop two eco-tourism sites.

One of the areas that has been put forward in the plans is currently used for a backpacking project, while the other is the site where television show Survivor is being filmed, reports the Fiji Times.

A recent council meeting ended with an agreement that investment in the regions should be made in order to establish the areas as eco-tourism sites and attract more visitors.

The Ministry of Tourism is to be approached with plans once filming of Survivor is complete and it is hoped that the publicity received from the show will help to promote that region in particular.

Local chiefs are said to be excited by the plans and are pleased that many jobs will be created for those who live in the region.

Investment plans are due to be drawn up soon before the relevant governmental departments asses them and announce if they will go ahead.
