More room in the Maldives
06 November 2006

The Maldives is set to benefit from the creation of a new tourism zone which will provide in the region of 300 additional beds.

The Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) has announced that the new zone will help to ease current overcrowding problems during the peak season.

Director general of the MTPB Abdulla Mausoom has revealed that a number of new hotels across four islands in the south will provide the extra beds, reports Travel Weekly.

'We need the additional capacity because we always have a shortage of beds in peak season,' said Mr Mausoom.

'Visitor numbers are down from two years ago but we are running at an average 82% occupancy.'

The hotels will be served by an airport which is situated on the island of Gan and work has already begun on building the new sites.

Plans are in place for a 200-villa spa hotel which should open on Villingili Island in 2008.
