Greece moves to calm UK fears
07 November 2006

The Greek tourism minister has moved to reassure tourists that her country is safe following the tragic deaths of two British school children.

Christianne and Robert Shepherd, aged seven and six respectively, died of carbon monoxide poisoning during a holiday on the island of Corfu in October.

Fani Palli-Petralia told delegates at the World Travel Market in London that the deaths were a tragedy, but she called for calm, reports Travel Weekly.

Ms Palli-Petralia said Greece and, in particular, Corfu should not be blamed for the incident which led to six hotel workers being charged by police.

Investigations are ongoing as to who should be held responsible and the hotel faces closure.

However, Ms Palli-Petralia told delegates that the tragic events were a one-off and they should not affect tourism in the country.

Experts have warned that given the sensitive nature of the deaths and the media attention the story received in the UK, Greece may see a downturn in bookings from the country.
