N Bengal gets investment
08 November 2006

The government of West Bengal has announced that it will invest in tourism in North Bengal.

Up to Rs 42 crore (£5m) is to be made available for development projects in the region, including the promotion of tea tourism.

The figure was decided during a meeting of the North Bengal Development Council and it is hoped that the investment will lead to an increase in visitor numbers.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who attended the meeting, told reporters that Rs 20 crore has already been released, with a further Rs 12 crore (£1.4m) due before September 2007. In addition, Rs 10 crore (£1.1m) will be presented as a government grant.

The money will be spent on infrastructure, agriculture and horticulture, with Mr Bhattacharjee revealing that much of the work is already complete and many more projects are up and running.

The development and promotion of tea tourism in North Bengal has already begun, with two tea gardens already identified as possible sites.

Mr Bhattacharjee also announced a review into the modernisation of the airport in Cooch Behar, with work set to begin soon.
