India's home-stay project
08 November 2006

India Tourism is working to get over the current shortage of hotel rooms in the city of Chennai by promoting a home-stay scheme.

Foreign tourists are being encouraged to stay with people who live in the region for the duration of their visit to the city.

The Government of India Body has been taking applications from homeowners and landlords who may want to have their buildings converted into bed and breakfasts, reports the New Indpress.

"We have circulated the instructions and the criteria for a house to qualify as a home-stay facility to most of the travel and tour operators," said a senior officer at India Tourism.

"The applications are also ready, we are waiting for interested persons," he added.

It is thought that the project will most likely attract tourists who are travelling on a budget and the rates will be low.

The criteria for converting a building into one which can be used in the home-stay project are the availability of basic amenities and adequate safety and security measures.

Each property will be inspected by a committee of tourism officials before being given a certificate, although the tariffs which can be charged will be set by an agency.
