Newquay's wee problem
09 November 2006

Britain's top surfing destination has moved to tackle an unsanitary problem it has developed with surfers relieving themselves.

Council members in Newquay have decided to install high-tech urinals on the streets which offer surfers somewhere to go during their all-night beach parties.

The urinals rise silently from the ground when night sets in, meaning those who are out after dark need not go to the loo in alleyways or bushes.

'Young men using the street as a toilet is not how we would like the town portrayed, and we needed to resolve the problem so that everyone in Newquay can benefit from the strong night-time economy,' said local councillor Anne Boosey.

'Newquay is a place with an all-year-round night life and the problem is pretty much 12 months of the year, especially as large quantities of drink are consumed,' she added.

The urinals were introduced after residents in the area complained about the number of party-goers coming out of clubs and relieving themselves in public.

In recent years Newquay has established itself as England's premier surfing scene and as a consequence, the town is often full with youngsters enjoying the night life.
