New Zealand sees tourism spending grow
09 November 2006

Tourism officials in New Zealand have announced that international visitors have spent $7 billion in the year up to June.

That signals an increase of $1 billion compared to the same period last year, but some industry figures are concerned that things may be about to change.

Plans are being bandied around which could see visitors being forced to pay a tax which would go towards building a new sports stadium in Aukland for use during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The proposals are in their infancy but many people are growing concerned that the country's reputation could be damaged if they are introduced.

'International visitors are already pouring billions into our economy,' Tourism Industry Association chief executive Fiona Luhrs told website stuff.co.nz.

'Forcing them to pay for a facility they will not benefit from risks making Auckland, and New Zealand, a less attractive destination.'

At present the country is riding a wave of big spending from foreign visitors and Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton has said the industry is key to New Zealand's economy.
