Tibet sees visitor numbers rise
10 November 2006

Tibet has received more than 2.25m visitors in the first ten months of 2006.

Statistics from the regional tourist bureau show that in the year leading up to October Tibet welcomed 31.8% more tourists than it did in the same period in 2005, reports the China Daily.

The majority of tourists were domestic, accounting for 93.5% of the total, while the number of visitors from abroad grew by 28%.

As a result of the increased tourism, more revenue has been generated, with the region seeing 2.4 billion yuan (£0.15 billion) brought in by visitors.

'Although winter is usually an off-season for tourism here, the number of tourists has been growing to some extent compared with the same period of last year,' said Zha'nor, deputy director of the regional tourism bureau.

The increase in visitor numbers is being put down to the opening of the controversial Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

Many Tibetans opposed the building of the rail link as they believe it may lead to the watering down of their culture.
