Vietnam's craft village tourism
13 November 2006
Officials in Quang Nam in Vietnam have announced plans to increase tourism by promoting another side to the region.
The province is home to many traditional craft villages and the authorities want to tap into the potential market of arranging organised tours, reports the Thanh Nien news agency.
Many of the craft villages are already attracting thousands of tourists every month and tourism groups are keen to continue the trend by helping to restore and develop a number of similar sites.
In the past 500 years, Quang Nam saw the number of traditional craft villages grow very quickly, and although many have survived, a great number have disappeared.
At present, there are 61 of the traditional settlements in the province, each of which has its own distinct produce.
The village of Kim Bong is famous for its carpentry, Tra Que produces the region's finest organic food and Dong Yen-Thi Lai is renowned for weaving silk dresses and blankets.
