Blackberry spa
13 November 2006
A number of people are benefiting from a new kind of spa treatment which is being offered by the Hyatt hotel chain.
Business travellers are being treated for a condition which has become known as Blackberry Thumb.
The injury is thought to be caused by the constant use of gadgets such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
The Hyatt chain has been administering treatment in its North American hotels and has even developed a special Blackberry balm.
Blackberry Thumb has been recognised by the American Therapy Association as an official work place complaint.
A number of experts have compared it to the Nintendo thumb of the 1990s, in which computer game players experienced discomfort after spending hours on their games consoles.
The spa now available to treat Blackberry Thumb came about after an increasing number of guests asked masseurs at Hyatt hotels if they could spend more time on their thumbs and arms.
